She was 11 years old when she landed the breakout role in Guillermo del Toro's 2006 film Pan's Labyrinth, and Ivana Baquero hasn't slowed down since. The Spanish beauty has successfully transitioned from child actress to full-fledged adult actress, a feat she doesn't take for granted. "When you start in the industry so young, it's easy to take it for granted. It’s hard to carry that passion into adulthood. Pan’s Labyrinth led me onto a successful path. I’ve been so fortunate, and I never wanted to let that go."

Her newest series, Spike's The Shannara Chronicles, is a fantasy drama based on the book series by Terry Brooks. Baquero plays the determined Eretria, a role which she covets. 

Tell us about your character Eretria on “The Shannara Chronicles”. Are there any similarities between you and your character?  

We are both determined and set goals for ourselves. Playing her has really opened up my appetite to action roles. I'm used to working in dramas and thrillers, but then Eretria came along and she has completely changed my lifestyle. A month before shooting began, I had to take part in boot camp and learn how to sword fight and ride horses. It has really tested my limits and I love it! 

You've been acting since such a young age. Was it hard balancing school, friends, and work? 

When other kids were playing volleyball or basketball after school, I was shooting movies. It was my own personal after school activity that eventually became a job. I was very independent growing up, as I'm an only child. But sometimes it was hard at school. When I would leave for an extended time to work, upon returning social groups would have already been formed. But, in my heart, I was doing what I loved, so it was never traumatic.

When did you realize that you wanted to make acting a full-time job?  

After school, I started traveling and working more, and taking on more adult roles. The passion to act never left and I knew that I wanted to carry it on into adulthood. 

Who were your role models growing up? 

My studies were really important and my parents advocated that a lot. I really looked up to Jodie Foster and Natalie Portman, child actresses who went on to university and transitioned extremely well into adulthood.

What have you accomplished so far that you are most proud of? 

Finishing high school. I’m currently studying law at university, which is really important to me. Also, coming from Spain and starting again here in the United States, and traveling to such incredible places, such as New Zealand for “The Shannara Chronicles” are experiences that I'm so grateful to have.  

Have you ever been starstruck?

I met Morgan Freeman in the elevator of a hotel once. The only thing that came out of my mouth was, “I love you” which was really awkward! I didn’t expect that reaction from myself. I also loved meeting Leonardo DiCaprio. 

What can viewers expect from season 2 of the show?

Season 2 premiers on October 11th on Spike. It takes place one year after the events of last season. The Four Lands are in chaos, and viewers can expect a lot of great action, romance, and comedy. There are also amazing female roles and such great elements that are relevant today.

Go-to beauty products?

I always have to wash my face at night and in the morning. I can't go to sleep without washing my face, even if I've been out all night and am really tired. Facial hygiene is the best beauty tip! 

Who are your beauty and style muses?  

Jessica Chastain and Angelina Jolie.  They are both beautiful and elegant with a mix of rebelliousness. 

If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?

Penelope Cruz. She was always one of my role models growing up because she's also Spanish. She came to the United States and has had such an amazing career.
