Are Capsule Wardrobes Still a Thing? Here's What Our Editor Thinks
I recently finished doing the whole “Tidying Up” thing at home, so much so that I needed a KonMari detox. There were bags and bags and bags and well, you get the idea, of donations and trash. My home started to echo when I walked in. It was glorious but also bare, my closet was no exception. I had jumped on the capsule wardrobe craze years ago but only recently have I become strict with it, donating everything that no longer sparked joy. My wardrobe consists of an endless array of basics.
While I loved the fact that getting dressed was easier, there were moments when I wished I had this or that, and then it hit me. I am so over the capsule wardrobe. In fact, I was effin’ bored. My goodness, how many ways can you wear a button up? Do not get me wrong, I'd buy a pair of basic dark skinny jeans in a heartbeat but my shopping style has surely changed.
I tried to add more accessories. I bought a headband from the Sincerely Jules Collection at Target. It added color to my basics. I added more hoops for a hobo chic look. I added a suede moto jacket for a more cool girl vibe. And before you knew it, I was back to adding to the capsule until it was a capsule no more. I realized that while my limited wardrobe made getting dressed in the morning easier, and for a while pushed my creativity, eventually there was nothing creative left. I took capsuling to the ultimate extreme until my wardrobe died a slow and painful death. No, I am not adding hot pink anything to my beautiful array of basics, except for maybe heels, but I needed more...ay yo no se...life!
While shopping for a striped tee, yet another overplayed basic, I opted for an off the shoulder striped sweater instead. Instead of black slacks for work, I added black paper bag waisted pants in vegan leather. Instead of that damn capsule, I am reinventing the basics in a way that is more fun, more youthful, and more...well, me. Dressing in the morning is not only just as easy, but it has become a lot more fun.
